Dr. Kay Redfield
Jamison
An
international authority and researcher on mood disorders and a recipient of the
prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, Kay Redfield Jamison has unique insight into
the world of mental illness. She has been there herself.

Hopkins

, Dr. Jamison shocked her colleagues by going public with her own struggle with
manic-depression in a 1995 Washington Post article and subsequent book, An
Unquiet Mind. The book became a New York Times bestseller and was
cited by several major publications as one of the best of the year.
Since
the release of An Unquiet Mind, Dr. Jamison has become a trusted
spokesperson for millions of people who suffer from mental illness. Audiences
describe her lectures as profound educational experiences. She addresses the
clinical and personal realities of depression and bipolar disorder in a manner
that encourages dialogue, empathy and hope.

Mitchell, ACSW
Robert Mitchell is a
Certified Social Worker with 42 years of experience. He is a popular seminar
leader and convention speaker who has shared his ideas with over 165,000 people.
Bob’s positive attitude has endeared him to professionals everywhere. He has a
special way of motivating others and makes each person feel as though they are spoken to
on an individual basis. Bob has been given the Distinguished Citizen’s Award
by the Mayor of Louisville and was awarded
Kentucky
’s Social Worker of the Year.
Ethics break-out sessions will involve an
empowering program that details the importance of ethical behavior by providing
an understanding of professional values and principles. This session is designed
not only to promote an understanding of and compliance with a code of ethics,
but also to reduce risk exposure related to unethical actions, malpractice
lawsuits, and paybacks to funding sources.

Roane, Ph.D., BCBA
Henry
S. Roane is the Director of Severe Behavior Disorders Program Center for Autism
Spectrum Disorders at the Munroe-Meyer Institute. He is also the Associate
Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
This
session will include the core characteristics of autism, will discuss the most
common variables associated with the occurrence of destructive behavior in
individuals with autism and will identify effective treatments for destructive
behavior displayed by children with autism.

Sanders, B.S., CADC
Jane
Sanders is a Certified Addiction Counselor and Prevention Specialist in the
State of
Iowa
with 30 years of experience in recovery, therapy and prevention field. She is
currently a Prevention Specialist at Jackson Recovery Centers working with
families, youth and the community.
This
workshop is intended to provide information in alcoholism, addiction and how the
family is affected. Symptoms associated with addiction and the way loved ones
respond to the addiction will be addressed as well as how a family does not need
to feel responsible for the addict’s usage.

Garvin
Serena
Garvin is assistant manager of Friendship House, a social club for individuals
with mental illness. She networks with peers from a variety of fields to support
the creation of opportunities for individuals experiencing mental health issues.
Serena
will be discussing her personal journey through mental health recovery. She will
explain that mental health recovery is a journey of healing and transformation
enabling a person with a mental health problem to live a meaningful life in a
community of his or her choice while striving to achieve his or her full
potential.
